"Ma On Shan Market Food Wise Action – Recycle, Donate, Spread Love"

2025-05-12

Last Friday, 10 students from The Church of Christ in China Ming Kei College, accompanied by their teacher, visited Sunshine City Wet market in Ma On Shan and participated in the food recycling campaign of the Food Commons Foundation, collecting, sorting and distributing vegetables. Along the way, the enthusiastic shop owner gave everyone sweet pastries to cheer them up, adding a touch of warmth and encouragement! Everyone returned the excess vegetables to Lee On Shopping Centre for the benefit of the elderly and neighbourhood. Among them, the youngest students focused on cleaning the plastic baskets. They were careful and responsible, fully embodying the spirit of environmental protection. Students shared their recycling experiences through group discussions and deepened their understanding of food waste and environmental protection.

A total of 227 kilograms of food were recovered that night, a fruitful result! Teachers and students unanimously appreciated the interactive platform provided by the Food Commons Foundation, which allowed students to witness the value of leftover food in the wet markets and learn how to benefit the community through recycling actions and promote a food-saving culture. This market recycling experience not only enhances students’ environmental awareness, but also promotes community care, allowing everyone to practice the social responsibility of “Save Food. Less Waste”.

p.s. June 11th is the 10th anniversary of the Food Commons Foundation! We will be holding a street market recycling experience fundraising event, please stay tuned for the announcement later, and we look forward to your support!
